A. M. CASSANDRE (ADOLPHE MOURON, 1901-1968) [HARPER'S BAZAAR.] 1936. Maquette.
13 3/4x10 1/4 inches, 35x26 cm.
Condition A: pencil, gouache and photomontage. Framed.
This unrealized maquette for a Harper's Bazaar cover must be one of the first that Cassandre attempted after being hired by the magazine. He had used photomontage in several previous projects, but he clearly decided not to follow this direction, and all of his published covers were gouaches in a symbolic / surrealistic style. He did, however, keep the idea of using a mirror and reflecting only lips and lipstick for the Harper's cover of October, 1937.
